About the Senate

The Senate plays a unique role in shaping our country’s democracy. As members of the upper house of Parliament, senators examine legislation, study public policy, champion causes and conduct interparliamentary diplomacy.

As a workplace, the Senate is composed of dynamic people representing our nation’s diverse talents, backgrounds and perspectives. We are committed to building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone is provided full and equal opportunity and access to employment, development and advancement. Build and advance your career by joining a team of dedicated professionals who are committed to excellence in support of senators and the institution.

How will you contribute?

The Senior Text Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the nighttime production and timely publishing of the Debates of the Senate (Hansard), ensuring delivery by the established 7:30 a.m. deadline regardless of unforeseen delays. Additionally, this role involves producing Senate committee proceedings and other publications, utilizing the Legislative Sector's electronic document management system, "Iris," to prepare content for website upload.

Key responsibilities include coordinating updates to the final reviewed version of the Debates of the Senate — a long-term project requiring collaboration across multiple offices. The Senior Text Coordinator also identifies and communicates potential issues related to methodology, equipment or staffing to the Chief of Publications, assists with client negotiations and provides solutions to technical challenges affecting production.

Given the independent nature of the role, the incumbent must possess a comprehensive understanding of the governing authorities for text content, the office's priorities and its operational needs. Strong communication skills are essential to ensure timely problem resolution when technical issues arise.

Please note this role has irregular hours. For example, when the Senate sits, the working hours are from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., working nine-hour shifts in a compressed work week. When the Senate is not sitting, the incumbent is expected to workday shift hours.
