How will you contribute?

Join the Independent Senators Group in shaping a more thoughtful, inclusive, and responsive Parliament. We are seeking a creative and motivated Junior Communications Officer for a 12-month contract - an exciting opportunity for an emerging communications professional with a passion for public service and a keen interest in Canadian politics.

As a key member of our communications team, you will lead day-to-day content creation and social media engagement, while supporting broader communications initiatives that help amplify the voices and work of Independent Senators. This role offers hands-on experience in a fast-paced parliamentary environment, where collaboration, adaptability, and strategic thinking are highly valued.

Core responsibilities:

  • Plan, draft, and schedule engaging content across social media platforms, aligning with ISG’s strategic communications goals;
  • Create visually compelling graphics and digital materials using tools like Canva;
  • Maintain and update the ISG website, ensuring content is accurate, timely, and accessible;
  • Draft press releases, public statements, and newsletters for internal and external audiences;
  • Support planning and execution of special communications projects and events;
  • Track analytics and engagement metrics to optimize content strategy and inform decisions;
  • Collaborate with team members using project management tools to ensure timely and coordinated delivery of content.

We welcome candidates with strong writing and design skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Experience working with equity-seeking communities, bilingualism, or a background in public affairs, journalism, or political science are considered strong assets.

The general public, to staff one (1) determinate (12 months) full-time position with the Independent Senators Group (ISG).

Prerequisites

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, or a related field, or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience using digital communications tools such as Wix, Hootsuite, and Canva (or similar platforms);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt tone and messaging for diverse audiences and platforms;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and respond to challenges with professionalism and a solutions-focused mindset;
  • Proven interest in Canadian politics, governance, or parliamentary affairs will be considered a strong asset;
  • Ability to work in both official languages (French and English) is considered an asset.
