About the Senate

The Senate plays a unique role in shaping our country’s democracy. As members of the upper house of Parliament, senators examine legislation, study public policy, champion causes and conduct interparliamentary diplomacy.

As a workplace, the Senate is composed of dynamic people representing our nation’s diverse talents, backgrounds and perspectives. We are committed to building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone is provided full and equal opportunity and access to employment, development and advancement. Build and advance your career by joining a team of dedicated professionals who are committed to excellence in support of senators and the institution.

How will you contribute?

Are you a detail-oriented professional with a passion for tradition, diplomacy, and high-profile events? Join the Office of the Usher of the Black Rod (UBR), where protocol meets purpose.

In this dynamic position, you will manage key aspects of logistics, protocol and administrative requirements relating to protocol and ceremonial matters within the UBR’s mandate. You’ll play a vital role in the planning and delivery of major Senate events—including historic and nationally significant ceremonies such as the Opening of Parliament, the Speech from the Throne, the Investiture of the Governor General, State Funerals, and official ceremonies hosted by the Speaker of the Senate. You will also support stakeholder events that reflect the Senate’s business and public role.

Beyond ceremonial functions, you will contribute to a wide range of activities within the Office of the UBR, including administrative coordination, records and information management, the Senate Page Program, and event logistics—ensuring smooth and seamless execution of the Office’s priorities and projects.

If you're an adaptable, action-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced, high-profile environment and enjoys working with diverse stakeholders at all levels, we encourage you to apply. This is your chance to be part of history in the making.
